Cultural collision between Maya and Europeans five centuries ago produced some of the most unique, singular manifestations of belief, art, and music that led to the development of new sacred traditions that were a combination of two different belief systems. European Catholic belief practices merged with indigenous American observances to create almost magical and mystical rituals and symbols that are found no where else. The Maya, in an amazing coincidence, were familiar with royal processions and were able to adapt and integrate their ancient beliefs with newer rituals of Christianity. Other examples of syncretism can be found in the imagery and symbology that overlaps both practices.
